Not Your Average Dog House

Shelter dogs and cats will now wait for their new families in style and comfort! With the theme, "Dog Digs and Cat Cribs - Décor and More for Those on Four," members of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), San Diego Chapter re-designed all 24 doggie apartments and 15 cat habitats at the San Diego Humane Society and SPCA, in January 2007.

Working within pet safety guidelines, each designer created a unique space that will assist in providing a positive atmosphere for pet adoption. In addition to providing pro-bono design services, designers also procure donated materials and furnishings to complete their rooms. Whether it is a cityscape or a jungle motif, these habitats will not only entertain visitors, but also provide safe, comfortable and enriching environments for adoptable pets.

The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA houses adoptable animals in comfy, apartment-like habitats. Dogs and cats live in spacious rooms complete with furniture in order to simulate a home environment. Not only does this way of housing animals help the Humane Society promote pets as part of the family, it also lowers the animal's stress levels and gives the staff further information about the animal's behaviors. Now these environments have been further enhanced for the enjoyment of both the animals and potential adopters thanks to designers from the ASID San Diego Chapter who have graciously volunteered their time and materials to making the habitats animal friendly and stylish.

While many animal welfare organizations are now looking into switching to apartment-like habitats, the San Diego Humane Society was one of the original design innovators.
